About Nördlinger Ries

Nördlinger Ries is a roughly 14-million-year-old meteorite impact crater located in the Bavarian region of southern Germany. Measuring about 24 kilometers (15 miles) in diameter, it is one of the best-preserved and studied impact craters in Europe. The crater was formed when an asteroid approximately 1.5 kilometers wide struck the Earth, drastically shaping the landscape and leaving behind unique geological features such as suevite rock and shocked quartz that visitors can identify across the region. The gently rolling terrain inside the crater today supports diverse farmland, small forests, and several picturesque villages, including the historic town of Nördlingen, which famously lies within the crater's basin.

The crater’s landscape offers a combination of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore well-marked hiking and biking trails that loop around the crater rim and extend into nearby woodlands. Notable landmarks include the Ries Crater Museum in Nördlingen, which provides an in-depth understanding of the impact event, and the St. George’s Church tower that offers panoramic views across the crater. The region also hosts geotourism activities and guided tours focused on its rare geological formations and the impact event’s significance. Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts appreciate the patchwork of farmland, groves, and wetlands that support local wildlife.

With its mix of outdoor recreation, scientific intrigue, and historical ambiance, Nördlinger Ries stands out as a compelling destination for hikers, geology buffs, photographers, and families interested in exploring a unique corner of Bavaria where the Earth's history is showcased in the landscape itself.
